Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is the web service that enables you to configure a relational database in the AWS cloud.

  • Amazon RDS currently supports different database engines – MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Amazon Aurora.
  • Amazon Aurora is a MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible relational database engine.
  • Amazon RDS does not provide a shell environment to access database instances.
  • Amazon RDS handles all the management of backups, software patching, automatic failure detection, and recovery.
  • The AWS Database Migration Service can be used to migrate databases to AWS. These can be homogenous (same database engine) or heterogeneous (different database engines) migrations.
